Small problems that are easier to fix early
Most dental emergencies start as small problems nobody noticed. A cracked filling, a deep cavity or an inflamed gum rarely appears overnight. These early signs are worth a visit:
| Early sign | What it can mean | Usual fix |
|---|---|---|
| Twinges with cold or sweets | A cavity or a worn filling | A filling |
| Pain when you bite down | A cracked tooth or filling | Bonding or a crown |
| A dark spot or rough edge | Decay or a chipped filling | A filling or bonding |
| Gums that bleed when you brush | Gum inflammation | A cleaning, sometimes gum therapy |
| A large old filling that keeps chipping | A weak tooth | A crown |
Only an exam and, when needed, an X-ray show which one applies to you.
How Dr. Poles repairs a cracked or weak tooth
The fix depends on how deep the damage goes. Dr. Poles explains the options that fit your tooth, and you choose what to do.
If a tooth is lost, you can read about implant options for Mount Prospect patients.
- 1 Bonding repairs a small chip or crack with tooth-colored material.
- 2 A crown covers and protects a cracked or heavily filled tooth.
- 3 A root canal treats an infected or damaged nerve, and you can read how a root canal saves a tooth.
- 4 Removal is the last option, used only when a tooth cannot be saved. Here is when a tooth has to come out.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
Do not see your question? Call us and we will talk it through.
Call (847) 483-8833How often should I have a dental checkup?
Many adults do well with a checkup and cleaning about every six months. People with gum disease, frequent cavities or heavy tartar may need visits more often. Dr. Poles suggests a schedule after looking at your teeth, gums and history.
Should I fix a small chip that does not hurt?
It is worth having it checked soon. A small chip can leave a sharp edge or a weak spot that cracks further with chewing. Often a quick bonding repair is enough, but a chip with pain or a dark spot inside the tooth needs prompt care.
Can a cracked tooth heal on its own?
No. Enamel does not grow back, and a crack can deepen with chewing until it reaches the nerve or splits the tooth. Depending on its depth, treatment may be bonding, a crown, a root canal or, if the tooth cannot be saved, an extraction.
What are the different specialists in dentistry?
Common specialties include endodontists for root canals, periodontists for gums, oral surgeons for complex surgery, orthodontists for alignment, pediatric dentists for children and prosthodontists for tooth replacement. A general dentist like Dr. Poles handles a wide range of care and refers when a case needs a specialist.
How close is Omni Dental to Mount Prospect?
Very close. Mount Prospect borders Arlington Heights, and the office at 305 E. Rand Road sits on the same road that runs past Randhurst Village. For most Mount Prospect, IL residents it is a short drive for checkups and repairs.
