How does the All-on-4 procedure work?
Four implants carry a whole arch of teeth. Two go toward the front of the jaw, and the two back implants are usually placed at an angle.
Tilting the back implants lets them use the bone you already have. It also keeps them clear of the sinus in the upper jaw and the nerve in the lower jaw.
For some patients, this means a full arch can be supported without the bone grafting that other designs would need. Whether that applies to you depends on what your X-rays show.

The All-on-4 bridge: temporary first, then final
The teeth you see and chew with are one fixed bridge. It screws onto the four implants, so it does not move while you eat or talk.
An All-on-4 bridge replaces the visible teeth and part of the gum line. That extra support helps fill out the lips and cheeks.
There are usually two stages of bridge:
- A temporary fixed bridge. It is attached once the implants are stable enough, and you wear it while the bone heals.
- The final fixed bridge. After healing, your final bridge is made to fit your bite, face and smile. Common materials are acrylic over a metal frame and zirconia.
You cannot remove the bridge at home. Your dentist can remove it at checkups to clean and inspect the implants.

Who is a good candidate for All-on-4 dental implants?
You may be a good fit if you are missing most of your teeth in one jaw or have many teeth that cannot be saved. You also need to be healthy enough for oral surgery.
Things that can change the plan:
- Bone. All-on-4 often works with less bone than other designs, but some bone is still needed.
- Gum disease or infection. Problems in the remaining teeth and gums are treated as part of the plan.
- Smoking and some health conditions. These can slow healing and affect your oral health over time.
- Grinding or clenching. A strong bite puts extra force on the bridge and may change the material choice.
The only way to know is an exam with X-rays. Dr. Poles reviews your bone, bite and health, then tells you whether All-on-4 makes sense or another design fits better.
All-on-4 vs snap in dentures vs a regular denture
Each way to replace a full arch has trade-offs. Here is how the main options compare.
| Option | Stays in? | Surgery | Daily care |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular denture | No, rests on the gums | None | Remove, brush and soak |
| Snap in denture on implants | Clips on, removable | Yes, fewer implants | Remove to clean, clips replaced over time |
| All-on-4 fixed bridge | Yes, fixed in place | Yes, four implants | Brush and clean under the bridge |
| An implant for every tooth | Yes | Most surgery and bone | Like natural teeth |
If you prefer a removable option, read how implant-supported dentures work. If both jaws need work, see our page on treating both jaws.
What to expect during the All-on-4 process
Every case is planned around the patient, but the path is similar:
- 01 Consultation. An exam, X-rays and a talk about your goals, health and budget. You can ask for a written estimate.
- 02 Planning. The implant positions and your new tooth shape and shade are planned before surgery.
- 03 Surgery. Any failing teeth are removed and the four implants are placed while the area is numbed. Tooth extractions are often done during the same surgery.
- 04 Healing. Over the next few months the implants bond with the bone. You eat soft foods early on.
- 05 Final bridge. Your final bridge is made, fitted and adjusted to your bite.

What are the downsides of All-on-4?
All-on-4 works well for many people, but it is not right for everyone. Knowing the downsides helps you decide.
- Surgery and healing. It is an oral surgery with a healing period before the final bridge.
- Upfront cost. A fixed arch costs more than a denture. See how full arch treatment is priced.
- Cleaning takes effort. You clean under the bridge every day with floss threaders or small brushes.
- Repairs. The bridge can chip or wear and may need repair over time.
- Four supports. If one implant has a problem, the whole bridge is affected until it is treated.

Are all on four dental implants worth it?
For people who struggle with a loose denture or many failing teeth, it often is. A fixed bridge lets you bite and chew without worrying about it moving.
It is a big decision, though. The right answer depends on your bone, your health, how you feel about surgery and your budget. Your consultation is where those pieces come together.

Ways to replace a full arch of teeth
All-on-4 is one of several ways to replace a full arch. Here is where each one fits.
All-on-4 Fixed Bridge
Four implants hold a fixed arch of teeth that stays in your mouth and does not come out at night.
Snap In Dentures
A removable denture that clips onto implants for a firm hold. You take it out to clean it each day.
Full Mouth Implants
Fixed teeth for both arches, planned together so your bite and smile stay balanced.
Traditional Dentures
No surgery and the lowest starting cost, though a denture rests on the gums and can slip.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
Do not see your question? Call us and we will talk it through.
Call (847) 483-8833How many teeth are on an All-on-4 bridge?
An All-on-4 bridge replaces a full row of teeth in one arch. The exact number of teeth depends on the size of your jaw, your bite and how far back the implants can support the bridge. Dr. Poles plans the tooth count, shape and shade with you before the final bridge is made.
How long do All-on-4 implants last?
There is no fixed number of years. The implants are meant as a long-term solution, and the bridge on top can wear or chip and may need repair. Daily cleaning under the bridge, regular checkups and not smoking all help keep the implants healthy.
What does All-on-4 cost with insurance?
It depends on your plan. Some plans pay toward the extractions, X-rays or the denture portion, while others exclude implants. Annual maximums also cap what a plan pays each year. Bring your insurance card and ask our front desk what your plan may cover before you decide.
Can All-on-4 be done on the upper jaw?
Yes. All-on-4 implants can be placed in the upper jaw, the lower jaw or both. The upper jaw often has softer bone and the sinuses sit close by, so careful planning matters. Your X-rays show how much bone you have and whether the design fits.
Can I see All-on-4 before and after photos?
Yes. The gallery on this page shows real Omni Dental patients before and after full-arch treatment. Every mouth is different, so photos show what is possible rather than what you will get. At your consultation, Dr. Poles explains what your own result could look like.
Can I eat normally with an All-on-4 bridge?
After healing, most people eat a wide range of foods with the final bridge. Early on you follow a soft diet so the implants can bond with the bone. Very hard or sticky foods can still damage the bridge, so Dr. Poles tells you what to avoid.
