What is a dental implant, and how does it work?
An implant takes the place of a tooth root. Once it bonds with your jawbone, it holds a new tooth in place, instead of the tooth resting on your gums.
Each tooth implant has three parts:
- The post, placed in the bone where the root used to be.
- The abutment, a small connector at the gum line.
- The restoration, which can be a crown, a bridge or a full denture.
Because the post sits in bone, it keeps the jaw working after a tooth is lost. A bridge or a removable partial rests on other teeth or on the gums instead.

Who is a good candidate for dental implants?
Most healthy adults with missing teeth can be considered. The deciding factors are your bone, your gums and your general health, not your age.
At your consultation, Dr. Poles looks at:
- Gum health. Active gum disease is treated first. Omni offers laser gum disease therapy when you need it.
- Bone volume. Bone shrinks after a tooth is lost. Some patients need a bone graft before an implant can go in.
- Health and habits. Uncontrolled diabetes, some medications and heavy smoking can slow healing. They do not always rule you out, but they change the plan.
- Your goals. One missing tooth, a few, or a whole arch each point to a different design.
Which implant fits the number of teeth you are missing?
Teeth implants are a family of treatments, not one procedure. This table shows where each option fits.
| Option | Good fit for | What it feels like |
|---|---|---|
| Single implant and crown | One missing tooth | Like a natural tooth, cleaned with normal brushing and floss |
| Implant bridge | Three or more missing teeth in a row | Fixed, with fewer implants than teeth |
| Implant denture | Most or all teeth missing, wants a removable option | Clips in firmly, comes out to clean |
| Fixed full arch | Most or all teeth missing in one jaw | Stays in, closest to natural teeth |
If you are missing most of your teeth, read how an All-on-4 bridge works, or see your options for replacing teeth in both jaws. Denture wearers often ask about snap in dentures, also called denture implants.

Implant materials: titanium and zirconia
Most dental implants are made of titanium. It has a long track record in dentistry and bonds well with bone.
Some patients ask about zirconia, a tooth-colored ceramic, for a front tooth or because they want a metal-free choice.
Zirconia implants are another option in dentistry. Dr. Poles tells you at your exam whether titanium or zirconia suits your case.
Zirconia is also a common material for the teeth on full arch bridges.
Each material has trade-offs in strength, design and how it handles your bite.

Dental implants in Arlington Heights, step by step
Treatment usually takes several visits over a few months, and the main steps are shown below. Two details matter most when you plan:
- Healing time. The bone bonds with the implant over a few months before the final tooth goes on.
- A temporary tooth. You can usually wear one while you heal.
Some patients ask about getting a temporary tooth at the surgery visit. Read about teeth in a day implants and who may qualify.

What does recovery feel like?
Soreness and some swelling are common for a few days after placement. Most people return to normal routines quickly, with soft foods at first.
Dr. Poles gives you aftercare instructions for your case: what to eat, how to clean the area and what to watch for. Call the office if anything feels different from what you were told to expect.

How do you care for an implant over time?
An implant cannot decay, but the gum and bone around it still need care. Brush twice a day and clean around the implant with floss or small brushes.
Regular cleanings and checkups let us spot gum inflammation early. The crown on top can wear like any restoration and may need replacing someday. Smoking and gum disease are common threats to the gum and bone around an implant.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
Do not see your question? Call us and we will talk it through.
Call (847) 483-8833What disqualifies you from dental implants?
Very few things rule you out for good. Untreated gum disease, too little bone, uncontrolled diabetes, some medications and heavy smoking can delay treatment or change the plan. Many of these can be managed first, for example with gum treatment or bone grafting. Dr. Poles reviews your health history and X-rays before he recommends implants.
Can I have all my teeth pulled and get implants?
Often, yes, when the remaining teeth cannot be saved. Failing teeth can be removed and a full arch of teeth placed on a small number of implants, sometimes at the same surgery, when your bone allows it. Teeth that are still healthy are usually worth keeping, so Dr. Poles checks each one before suggesting a full arch plan.
Is it worth getting dental implants in your 70s?
For many people, yes. Age alone is rarely the deciding factor. Your general health, your bone and how well you heal matter more. Many older adults choose implant-supported dentures or a fixed arch so they can chew with confidence and stop worrying about a loose denture.
What is the average cost of dental implants in Illinois?
There is no average worth relying on, because quotes cover different things. The number of implants, the crown, bridge or denture on top, and steps such as bone grafting all change the total. An exam and X-rays come first, then you get a written estimate that lists each stage.
Does insurance cover dental implants?
Some dental plans pay toward parts of treatment, such as the exam, X-rays, extractions or the crown, while others exclude the implant post. Omni Dental accepts most major dental plans, including Aetna, Cigna, Delta Dental and MetLife. The front desk checks your benefits before treatment starts.
Will I have a gap while my implant heals?
Usually not in a visible spot. Depending on your case, you may wear a temporary crown, a small removable tooth or your current denture while the bone bonds with the implant. Dr. Poles plans the temporary option with you before surgery, so you know what to expect.
