What do braces and clear aligners do?
Both use steady, gentle pressure to move teeth into better positions over time. The goal is a bite that works well, teeth that are easier to clean and a smile you feel good about.
Straighter teeth also support your oral health. Crowded teeth trap plaque in tight spots, and a bite that is off can wear teeth unevenly.
- Braces use brackets attached to the teeth and a wire that is adjusted over time.
- Clear aligners, such as Invisalign, use a series of removable plastic trays. Each tray moves your teeth a small step.

Braces in Arlington Heights, plus Invisalign, at one office
Omni Dental offers braces, Invisalign and retainers. Your recommendation is based on your bite, not on the one option an office happens to provide.
Your teeth, gums, bite, habits and goals shape the plan. Your orthodontic care is then timed around your cleanings, fillings and any cosmetic plans.

Are orthodontists different from general dentists?
Yes. An orthodontist is a dentist who completed extra specialty training in moving teeth and guiding jaw growth. A general dentist provides a wide range of care, and many also offer braces and clear aligners for suitable cases.
Dr. Poles is a general dentist, not an orthodontist. He treats teens and adults whose cases fit braces or Invisalign at a general dental office.
Some cases are better suited to an orthodontist. Examples include severe jaw differences and young children whose jaws are still growing. If that applies to you, you will hear it plainly, with the reasons.
Braces vs Invisalign: which fits you?
The right choice depends on your bite and your habits more than on looks alone.
| Question | Braces | Invisalign |
|---|---|---|
| Look | Visible brackets and wire | Clear and hard to spot |
| Food | Avoid hard and sticky foods | Aligners come out to eat |
| Cleaning | Extra time and tools | Brush and floss as usual |
| Wear | Fixed, works full time | Works only when worn |
| Best for | Larger rotations and bite corrections | Mild to moderate crowding and spacing |
Metal braces are the most visible choice but handle complex movement well. Tooth colored ceramic brackets, sometimes called clear braces, are less visible. Dr. Poles can explain whether they are an option for your case.

Signs you may benefit from braces
You do not need a referral to ask about straightening your teeth. Consider an exam if you notice any of these:
- Teeth that overlap, twist or feel crowded
- Gaps that bother you or trap food
- Upper teeth that sit far in front of or behind the lower teeth
- Teeth that do not meet when you bite down
- Teeth that have shifted since you had braces years ago

What happens after your first visit?
Cavities or gum problems are treated first, so your teeth start from a healthy base. With braces, the brackets and wire go on at a fitting visit, and you return at regular intervals for adjustments.

Living with braces
A few habits protect the brackets and keep your teeth clean during treatment:
- Skip hard foods like nuts, ice and hard candy, and sticky foods like caramel
- Cut crunchy foods such as apples and carrots into small pieces
- Brush after meals and use floss threaders or a water flosser around the wire
- Call the office if a bracket comes loose or a wire pokes your cheek

Orthodontic care for teens and adults
Teens often do well with braces because they work without having to remember aligners. Adults choose either option. Many straighten their teeth to make cleaning easier or to prepare for crowns, bridges or veneers.

How do you keep your result?
Teeth tend to drift once braces come off or aligners end. Retainers hold teeth in their new positions, so wear them as directed.
Keep up regular cleanings during and after treatment. Plaque builds up quickly around brackets, and healthy gums support teeth that have just moved.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
Do not see your question? Call us and we will talk it through.
Call (847) 483-8833Is Dr. Poles an orthodontist?
No. Dr. Poles is a general dentist with advanced training, a Master of the Academy of General Dentistry with 22+ years of experience. He offers braces and Invisalign for cases that suit a general dental office. If your case calls for an orthodontist, he will tell you.
Which is better, braces or Invisalign?
Neither is better for everyone. Invisalign works well for many cases of crowding, spacing and mild to moderate bite problems, and it is removable. Braces work full time and often suit severe or complex cases. Your exam shows which option is likely to reach your goal.
Do braces hurt?
Braces usually feel snug or sore for a few days after they are placed and after adjustments. The brackets can rub your cheeks at first. Orthodontic wax and soft foods help while you adjust, and Dr. Poles gives you care instructions for your case.
Am I too old for braces?
There is no upper age limit for moving teeth, as long as your gums and the bone around your teeth are healthy. Many adults straighten their teeth to fix shifting after childhood braces, make cleaning easier or prepare for crowns or veneers.
How long does treatment with braces take?
It depends on how far your teeth need to move and the type of treatment you choose. Treatment is usually measured in months, and small corrections tend to finish sooner. Keeping your appointments helps treatment stay on schedule. You get an estimated timeline at your exam.
Does dental insurance cover braces?
Orthodontic coverage varies more than most dental benefits. Some plans limit it by age or with a lifetime maximum, and others leave it out. Omni Dental accepts most major dental plans, and our front desk can help you check what your plan includes before you start.
