Cosmetic dentistry
What does a cosmetic dentist do?
Cosmetic dentistry focuses on how your teeth look: their color, shape, length, spacing and how they line up with your lips. Many treatments help function too, like a crown that protects a cracked tooth.
At Omni Dental, Dr. Poles provides cosmetic care as a general dentist with advanced training and membership in the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD).
What are the different types of cosmetic dentistry procedures?
Each of these cosmetic dentistry options solves a different problem. Here is how they compare at a glance.
| Treatment | Good fit for | Visits | Change to the tooth |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whitening | Yellowing and surface stains | Depends on the method | None |
| Bonding | One chip, small gap or rough edge | Often one | Little or none |
| Composite veneers | Several chipped or uneven front teeth | Often one or two | Little or none |
| Porcelain veneers | A lasting change in color and shape | A few, over weeks | A thin layer of enamel |
| Crowns | Cracked, weak or heavily filled teeth | Usually two or more | Shaped all around |
| Invisalign | Crooked or crowded teeth | Regular checkups | None, the teeth move |
Read how porcelain and composite veneers are planned, or start simple with professional whitening or tooth colored bonding.

How is your smile planned before treatment?
Good cosmetic work is planned, not improvised. Dr. Poles looks at how much of your teeth show when you talk and smile, your gum line and how your teeth meet.
- Shade: chosen with you, often after whitening so new work matches a brighter base.
- Shape and length: matched to your face, your lips and the teeth beside them.
- Preview: photos, models or a trial smile may let you see the look before you commit.
- Conservative prep: the smallest change to healthy enamel that still meets your goal.
- Order: health first, then planning for missing teeth, straightening, whitening and finishing work.
Sometimes the plan is simpler than you expect. Whitening and one small bonding repair can be all you need.

What is composite bonding?
Composite bonding is tooth colored resin added to a tooth, shaped by hand, hardened with a light and polished. It can repair a chip, close a small gap or soften an uneven edge.
It usually takes one visit and little or no drilling. Resin stains and chips more easily than porcelain, so it may need touch ups over time.
Smile makeover
What does a smile makeover involve?
A smile makeover combines two or more treatments in a planned order. The order matters, because each step changes the next one.
Not everyone needs every step. Your plan follows your teeth and your goals.
- 1 Health first. Cavities and gum problems are treated.
- 2 Plan replacements. Missing teeth are planned for early, since implants or bridges affect spacing and the final shade.
- 3 Straighten. Invisalign moves teeth that need to shift.
- 4 Whiten. Natural teeth are lightened to your chosen shade.
- 5 Refine. Bonding, veneers, crowns or implant crowns are matched to that shade.

What does cosmetic dentistry cost, and does insurance help?
Your cost depends on the treatments you choose and how many teeth they involve. Most plans treat purely cosmetic care as elective, but care that also repairs damage, like a crown, may be partly covered.
Omni Dental accepts most major dental plans, including Aetna, BlueCross BlueShield, Cigna, Delta Dental and MetLife. Coverage depends on your plan.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
Do not see your question? Call us and we will talk it through.
Call (847) 483-8833What is the most common cosmetic dental procedure?
Teeth whitening is one of the most common, because it brightens your smile without changing tooth structure. Bonding and veneers are also popular for chips, gaps and uneven teeth. The right first step depends on what bothers you most, which an exam helps clarify.
What is the 3-3-3 rule for dental care?
It is a popular rule of thumb, not an official guideline, usually described as brushing three times a day for three minutes. The American Dental Association recommends brushing twice a day for two minutes with fluoride toothpaste and cleaning between teeth daily. Good habits protect cosmetic work too.
Who provides cosmetic dentistry at Omni Dental?
Dr. Bilus Poles, founder and lead dentist, plans your cosmetic care with you. Lab made work such as porcelain veneers and crowns is made by a dental lab to his plan, and he fits it. Ask him at your consultation which options suit your teeth.
Can I see my new smile before treatment starts?
Often, yes. Depending on the treatment, Dr. Poles may use photos, models, a trial smile placed over your teeth or temporary veneers to show the planned shape and length. You can ask for changes at this stage, before final work is made.
How long does cosmetic dental work last?
It depends on the treatment. Whitening fades gradually and can be touched up. Bonding and composite may need repairs sooner, while porcelain veneers and crowns tend to last longer. Your bite, any grinding and your home care all affect how long a result keeps its look.
Can I get cosmetic work if I have gum disease?
Gum disease is treated first, because cosmetic work needs healthy gums to look good and hold up. Omni Dental offers gum disease treatment, including laser therapy, and Dr. Poles holds a Certificate of Proficiency in Dental Laser Surgery. Once your gums are healthy, cosmetic care can begin.
