What should you do until you reach the dentist?
The first minutes after an injury can decide whether a tooth can be saved. These steps are general first aid, not a substitute for an exam.
- Knocked-out adult tooth: pick it up by the crown, not the root, and rinse it gently. If you can, place it back in the socket and bite on a clean cloth. If not, keep it in milk and get to a dentist as soon as possible. Never put a baby tooth back in.
- Broken tooth: save any pieces. Rinse your mouth with warm water and hold a cold compress on your cheek.
- Toothache: rinse with warm water and floss gently to remove trapped food. Don’t put a pain pill against the gum, as it can burn the tissue.
- Lost crown: keep the crown safe and bring it with you. Avoid chewing on that side.
- Bleeding in the mouth: press clean, damp gauze on the area for 10 to 15 minutes.
Ask your doctor or pharmacist which pain reliever is safe for you, and follow the label.

Will the ER do anything for dental pain?
