How Does a Periodontist Treat Gum Disease?

A periodontist is a specialized dental professional who deals with diseases of the gums or periodontal disease. They must complete additional schooling beyond typical dentistry in order to be fully certified and qualified.

This extra training involves staying informed on the latest medical techniques and technology used to diagnose and treat gum disease.

Periodontists use treatments such as scaling and root planing, deep cleaning, laser therapy, antibiotics, and surgical interventions to effectively treat periodontal disease. They can also provide patients with customized plans of care tailored to their unique needs.

Seeing a periodontist at one of our Bellevue, Everett, or Kirkland locations is essential if you suspect that you have gum disease. Early detection is key to preventing the progression of this condition and improving your oral health.

What are the symptoms of gum disease?

Gum disease is an ongoing infection in the gums, which can lead to bone and tooth loss. It can sometimes be silent, meaning there is no symptoms present. Some common signs of gum disease include:

  • Pain or sores in the mouth
  • Bleeding while brushing or flossing
  • Swollen, red, or tender gums
  • Loose or separated teeth
  • Gum recession
  • Bad breath
  • Bite changes
  • Pus between the gum and teeth
  • Tooth Sensitivity

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, be sure to contact us so that we can evaluate and provide appropriate treatment. Our team at Omni Dental is dedicated to providing top-notch care and helping our patients maintain healthy gums for life.

What are the stages of periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease is a serious condition that can lead to tooth and bone loss if left untreated. There are four stages of periodontal disease that may be diagnosed: gingivitis, slight periodontal disease, moderate periodontal disease, and advanced periodontal disease.

Gingivitis is the first stage of periodontal disease and is caused by plaque buildup at or around the gum line. If caught early, gingivitis can be reversed non-surgically with professional cleaning and improved oral hygiene habits.

Slight periodontal disease affects both the bone and fibers that support tooth roots. Extra treatments may be necessary at this stage, such as scaling and root planing.

Moderate periodontal disease results in more destruction to the bone and gum tissue than slight periodontal disease. Additionally, gum pockets around the teeth are now deeper. Treatment for this stage of gum disease typically involves deep cleaning and may require surgery to prevent further damage.

Advanced gum disease is the most severe form of periodontal disease and requires more extensive treatment. At this point, teeth may be severely damaged or even lost. Treatment plans typically involve extensive cleaning and surgery to restore gum health.

Gum disease treatments

Gum disease treatments vary depending on the severity of the condition, so it is important to see a periodontist for an evaluation. Omni Dental provides comprehensive services and treatments to help our patients manage their gum disease.

some of the most common periodontal treatment options that we use include:

• Professional dental cleanings: Regular professional teeth cleanings help to remove plaque and tartar buildup on the teeth and gums, preventing further damage.

• Scaling and root planing: Deep cleaning of the teeth and surrounding gum tissue helps to reduce inflammation, dislodge plaque, and smooth out rough patches on the tooth root.

• Laser therapy: Our periodontists use laser therapy to reduce bacteria and improve the health of the gum tissue.

• Antibiotics: Topical or oral antibiotics may be prescribed to help reduce inflammation, kill bacteria, and promote healing.

• Surgical interventions: In some cases, our periodontists may recommend surgical interventions to restore gum health and prevent further damage.
