Is it an emergency, or can it wait?
Not every dental problem needs the next open slot. Use this as a rough guide.
Call right away
- an adult tooth knocked out or pushed out of place
- a toothache bad enough to keep you up at night
- swelling in the gums, jaw or face
- broken teeth with sharp pain when you bite
- bleeding after an extraction that will not slow down
Call soon, usually not urgent
- a small chip with no pain
- a lost filling or a crown that came off but does not hurt
- a denture that broke but can still be worn
- mild sensitivity to cold
When in doubt, call and describe it. The team helps you decide how soon you should be seen.

First aid before you reach an emergency dentist from Palatine
For a knocked-out adult tooth, touch only the chewing end, slide it back into the socket or into a cup of milk, and call right away. For broken teeth, toothaches and lost crowns, see first aid steps for each emergency.

What to tell the front desk when you call from Palatine
A clear description helps the team plan your visit and the timing of your drive. Have these ready:
- What happened, and when it started.
- Where it hurts, and what makes it worse.
- Any swelling in the gums, jaw or face.
- Past work on that tooth, such as a crown or root canal.
- The medicines you take, and any pain reliever you used today.
Please mention that you are coming from Palatine, so the team can suggest a time that allows for the drive.

When to go to the hospital instead
Some problems need medical care before dental care. Go to an emergency room or call 911 for swelling that affects breathing or swallowing. The same goes for heavy bleeding that will not stop or a serious injury to the jaw or head.
The same applies on evenings and weekends, when our office is closed. Once you are safe, a dentist can treat the tooth itself.

The drive from Palatine to our office
Omni Dental is at 305 E. Rand Road in Arlington Heights. For most Palatine patients it is a short drive.
Rand Road connects the two towns, so you stay on one main road much of the way.
We are open Monday to Friday, 10 AM to 6 PM, and closed on weekends. Please call as early in the day as you can, so the team can plan your visit. Your regular checkups can happen here, too: see routine care for Palatine families.
What happens at your emergency visit
Your visit focuses on finding the cause and easing the problem:
- 1 Dr. Poles asks what happened and looks at the area.
- 2 X-rays show whether the root, nerve or bone is involved.
- 3 He explains what he sees and your choices, in plain words.
- 4 Treatment may start on what needs care first, such as a filling, a temporary crown, a root canal or an extraction. Other work can be planned for later.

Embarrassed about your teeth? Call anyway
Many people put off a dentist because they feel embarrassed about the state of their teeth. The team focuses on the problem in front of you and explains each step, so you can feel more relaxed during the visit.
Dr. Poles is a general dentist with advanced training and a Master of the Academy of General Dentistry.

How to lower the odds of the next emergency
- Wear a sports mouthguard for contact sports.
- Ask about a night guard if you clench or grind.
- Do not chew ice, pens or hard candy.
- Keep up regular exams, so a cracked filling or deep cavity is found before it hurts.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
Do not see your question? Call us and we will talk it through.
Call (847) 483-8833Will an emergency dentist pull my tooth?
Only when the tooth cannot be saved. Dr. Poles usually looks at a filling, crown or root canal first. If removal is the right call, he explains why and talks through replacing the tooth before anything is done.
What qualifies as a dental emergency?
Anything that needs prompt care to ease severe pain, stop bleeding, treat infection or save a tooth. A knocked-out adult tooth, a cracked tooth that hurts to bite, and gum or face swelling all qualify. A small chip that does not hurt can usually wait for a regular visit.
What should I do if the office is closed?
Omni Dental is open Monday to Friday, 10 AM to 6 PM, and closed on weekends. For a serious problem, follow the hospital advice on this page. Otherwise, use first aid and call us when we open on the next weekday.
Can the ER do anything for tooth pain?
An emergency room can treat a spreading infection, heavy bleeding or an injury to the face or jaw. Most ERs have no dentist on duty, so the tooth itself usually still needs a dental visit afterward. Bring any hospital paperwork with you.
Will my dental insurance cover an emergency visit?
Most dental plans include some benefit for exams and X-rays, and often for treatment such as fillings or root canals. Omni Dental accepts most major plans, including Aetna, BlueCross BlueShield, Cigna, Delta Dental and MetLife. Your own plan sets the details.
Should I call even if I am not sure it is an emergency?
Yes. A short call can tell you whether to come in soon or book a regular visit. The front desk can also tell you what to bring, such as your insurance card and a list of your medicines.
